Unique in the industry worldwide – S&S Scheftner GmbH successfully launches new investment despite uncertain economic situation

Mainz, August 2, 2024 – S&S Scheftner GmbH has successfully launched its latest investment at the Mainz site. Despite the uncertain economic situation in the European market, the company’s vision of producing perfect alloy powders for the dental and medical industries has been successfully implemented. Thanks to the certified process according to ISO 13485, the company is one of the few worldwide that can offer both contract manufacturing and its own production lines of alloy powders as medical products according to Paragraph 120 MDR. With additional certifications such as MDSAP and international registrations in the USA, Canada, China, and other countries, S&S Scheftner GmbH is well-positioned to offer its products immediately on global markets.

A new expertise of the company is metallurgy and powder processing from recycled raw materials. This expansion of the competence field also enables the production of highly specialized alloy powders that are gaining importance in the dental industry. Especially in dental technology, where precision and biocompatibility are crucial, this technology has proven to be excellent. This investment of more than 10 million euros in Mainz, which was funded with 1.470 million euros by the Ministry of the Environment, underscores the commitment of S&S Scheftner GmbH to continuously expand its production capacities and technological capabilities.

Furthermore, S&S Scheftner GmbH places great emphasis on sustainable resource management. Through innovative recycling processes, valuable raw materials can be recovered and reintroduced into the production cycle. This not only conserves natural resources but also reduces production costs and decreases CO2 emissions, significantly improving the environmental balance.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is revolutionizing many industries, including dental and medical technology. S&S Scheftner GmbH uses methods such as Powder Bed Laser Fusion (PBLF), Powder Bed Fusion (PBF), and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) as preferred methods for serial production. These technologies enable the production of complex and individualized components with high precision and material efficiency. Parts manufactured using these methods are characterized by high strength and excellent surface quality, making them particularly suitable for applications in dental technology.

Further investments in the machinery park ensure the production and development of own products and allow customers to integrate powders into additive manufacturing. The powders at S&S Scheftner are processed in highly automated processes from atomization to hermetically sealed packaging under a protective atmosphere to avoid the negative influence of external factors.

The 35-year-old company, with over 25 years of experience in the manufacture of medical products and about 15 years in the production of alloy powders for additive manufacturing, has built up unique know-how. Customers appreciate the opportunity to continue their development work and ensure continuity of supply. This know-how required many years, as only a few companies produce alloy powders and there are only a few qualified specialists for external companies.

Thanks to its innovative ideas, Scheftner has set new accents in the area of processing and production of powders. Although the company is one of the youngest in the industry, it has earned a firm place through its expertise and innovative strength.

The powders produced so far are used in almost all 3D printers for metal worldwide. Together with NPPower, a startup that was founded, S&S Scheftner meets its own needs for spare parts and uses the knowledge gained to improve its products.
